July 2023 Coalition Meeting 

Meeting Highlights â€‹â€‹

  • The Coalition for a TB-Free NYC met to discuss a strategy for optimizing TB care coordination (from testing to treatment) for the asylum seekers in NYC. 65 stakeholders and partners were in attendance.

  • Max Hadler, Director of Policy and Immigrant Initiatives from the Center for Health Equity and Community Wellness, presented "NYC Asylum Seeker Response: Supporting New New Yorkers," a contextualization and update on newly arriving populations in NYC. 

​

  • Dr. Joseph Burzynski, Assistant Commissioner of the Bureau of TB Control, presented "Tuberculosis (TB) Detection, Care and Prevention among New Arrivals in NYC" on the state of TB among new arrivals in NYC.

​

  • A panel discussion on TB Care for Asylum Seekers with four NYC healthcare providers: Caralee Caplan-Shaw, MD (Bellevue Hospital), Christian Olivo Freites, MD (Ryan Health), Radeyah Hack, MD, MPH (NYU Langone), and Linda You, FNP-C (Floating Hospital), also showcased obstacles and opportunities to treating TB and LTBI in the asylum seeker populations.

  • Forward Planning for Coalition Meetings: For future meetings, we would like to continue planning, strategizing, and creating solutions around TB care for asylum seekers. At this link, please rank potential topics for upcoming TB Coalition strategy sessions in order of importance and we will plan topic/issue focused meetings with the goal of problem solving around shared challenges. â€‹
